What is the name of the little indentation on the upper lip just beneath the nose, and does it serve any meaningful purpose?
S. Woods, Montreal Canada
- It's called a philtrum and I don't think it has a purpose as such. In the developing foetus, it is the point at which the two sides of the face join together so it might be appropriate to think of it as a kind of 'seam'. In children with a cleft palate, this seam fails to join up.
Max Wurr, Stanmore
- Cherub's bow.
